The experience of the sellers

From the first day of arriving in Cortona, and stopping for a coffee in Piazza Republica, I realised this was the place for our Holiday home.

My husband, who had just retired also wanted somewhere that he could renovate.

We started our search the following day, after two viewings the third property was this apartment, which was the top third of a 16c building.

It had four windows which overlooked from the Town hall steps, the whole length of Via Nazionale down to Piazza Garibaldi.

But the Piece de Résistance was when at the top of the house, I stepped onto the roof terrace. From there the view stretched to Lake Trasimeno and across the Valdichiana  and on to the distant Montepulciano. It took my breath away! From that moment, I knew this was the home for us-we fell in love with it. That was in 1999.

We leave with a heavy heart, our experiences in this wonderful vibrant city have been enormous.

We have had many enjoyable dinner parties and lunches with family and friends on our roof terrace, the largest event was an evening buffet for fourteen people for my Birthday, with the view of the twinkling lights in the valley below. Such a magical evening that I will never forget.

From our unique viewing position looking down from our windows we can see and hear below, the religious festivals, parades, flag throwing and Paleo’s all wearing  their beautiful brightly coloured Medieval costumes which is a wonderful sight.

Also being in the centre of Cortona you are minutes away from the numerous family run restaurant’s, all serving delicious local cuisine.

The Teatro Signorelli with its amazing acoustics has played a large part in our life here.

The world famous artists have been numerous, including. Violinists Joshua Bell and Sarah Chang, Sopranos, Danielle de Niese--Renee Fleming and Angela Gheorghiu, and the pianist Lang Lang, to name but a few.

Also the outdoor performances in Piazza Signorelli have included the world renowned Bolshoi Ballet.

From our doorstep we have enjoyed many of the numerous walks, including one past Frances Mayes ‘Bramasole’ and on up to Santa Margherita and the Fortezza  Medicea.

Fifteen minutes’ drive away is Lago Trasimeno and the two sailing clubs at “Castiglione del Lago” and “Passignano”,  around the lake there is also a cycle track.

We have spent many happy hours sailing and having picnics in the centre of the lake on our 7’4 Mt; alpa sailing cruiser, which is also available, and includes four sailing lessons for the novice sailor.

Would we like these experiences again? YES! In a heartbeat.
