THE CHURCH OF SAN CRISTOFERO CAN BE FOUND IN THE QUIET UPPER REACHES OF CORTONA TOWN IN IL POGGIO...
The Church of San Cristofero stands in the upper reaches of Cortona in il Poggio. It is probably the oldest church in Cortona and a plaque states that it was consecrated in 1192.
In 1575 it was renovated and modified due to fire and earthquake damage. In the eighteenth-century it was altered to its current appearance.
In 1960, the fourteenth-century frescoes of the Umbrian-Sienese school depicting the Crucifixion, the Annunciation, the Ascension, and at the top, Christ between two angels giving his blessing, was restored and placed on the left wall.
You can enter via the chapel of the Nativity of Mary below the Romanesque bell tower which was added in the sixteenth century.
Il Poggio, with its central garden square, is an immensely beautiful and tranquil part of Cortona town. It is like stepping back in time.
The added advantage to this area is that from Porta Montanina - a few short steps away - one can walk out into the countryside and enjoy some of the best views Cortona has to offer.
Porta Montanina leads out into Cortona's surrounding countryside - ideal for long peaceful walks. Il Poggio is unique in that one remains in the centre of town, away from the bustle, but with direct access to the countryside.
