PHOTOGRAPHS: POPPY COMPETITION 2023

A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS TO OUR COMPETITION CELEBRATING THE WONDERFUL POPPY FLOWER...

Poppies are beautiful, joyous flowers that arrive in spring and endure throughout the summer, but they are also associated in many countries around the world as a symbol of remembrance for those who died in the First World War. Apparently, they were a common sight, especially on the Western Front. They flourished in the soil churned up by the fighting and shelling. The flower provided Canadian doctor John McCrae with inspiration for his poem 'In Flanders Fields', which he wrote whilst serving in Ypres in 1915 (see below for poem).
All of the photographs sent in were a celebration of this stoic, hardy flower and as such, they all seemed equally beautiful. Our three favourite however, perhaps influenced by the sombre words of McCrae's poem, were Carolyn Kennedy's, Patrick Muylle's and Robert Brant's. We invite all three of you to pop into the office and pick up your prize!
