ALONDRA GONZALEZ REYNOSO, A UGA STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM STUDENT, SHARES HER ARTIST STATEMENT ON CORTONA...
Alondra
Gonzalez Reynoso, a student with the University of Georgia (UGA) Cortona Study abroad program, spent this last semester studying photography under the tutelage of Jeff Curto, professor of photography. A
business student back in Georgia, this was the first time she had ever taken an
art class. She shares with us her photographs of Cortona and her Artist
Statement, entitled Homesick, in which she draws comparisons between her
parents’ hometown in Juchipila in Mexico and Cortona…
Juchipila, Mexico - home town to Alondra's parents
Homesick: I
have never wanted to make a place feel more like home than here. Not just
because it’s Italy (and who wouldn’t want to live here?) but because I am
constantly reminded of home with everything that I experience.
For the past three months, I have had the privilege
to call Cortona my home – and a beautiful one at that. Throughout my time here,
I have not only become more appreciative of Italian culture and its customs,
but also of my own. It is as though they share the most beautiful parts of
their culture with each other, and I am lucky to be able to experience all
sides of it.
Thus, my work attempts to portray Cortona in
such a way that it resembles the memories I have of my parents’ hometown in
Mexico: Juchipila. It’s a small town full of life and tradition, much like
Cortona, and a place I hold dear in my heart. As a kid, I took for granted all
the times we visited, thinking it was just another dusty, old town, but as I
have gotten older, going to visit is the one thing I look forward to every year. Now, as I find myself on the other side of
the world, I am happy to be able to share a little of what has made this place
feel like home for me.
