Joust of the Saracen

Arezzo

Joust of the Saracan, Arezzo
The Giostra del Saracino, or Joust of the Saracen, is a historic equestrian tournament held twice annually in Arezzo, Tuscany. This vibrant event, steeped in medieval tradition, pits the city’s four historic quarters—Porta Crucifera, Porta del Foro, Porta Sant’Andrea, and Porta Santo Spirito—against each other in a spirited competition for the coveted Golden Lance.
Historical Origins
The origins of the Giostra del Saracino trace back to the Middle Ages, evolving from military training exercises designed to hone knights’ skills. The tournament was regularly held between the 16th and 17th centuries, with baroque-style jousts commemorating significant civic events. After periods of decline and revival, the modern iteration of the joust was reinstated in 1931 and has since become a cherished tradition in Arezzo.
The Tournament
The joust takes place in Piazza Grande, Arezzo’s historic square. Each quarter fields two knights who, riding at full gallop, aim their lances at the “Buratto,” a rotating wooden effigy representing the Saracen enemy. Points are awarded based on the accuracy and strength of the strike, with penalties for missteps. The quarter with the highest total points claims the Golden Lance.
Festivities and Traditions
The Giostra del Saracino is more than a tournament; it’s a citywide celebration. In the week leading up to the event, Arezzo comes alive with medieval pageantry, including costumed parades, flag-throwing displays, and propitiatory dinners in each quarter. The day of the joust features a grand procession of over 300 participants in historical attire, culminating in the thrilling competition.
For those interested in experiencing this unique blend of history, culture, and community spirit, the Giostra del Saracino offers an unforgettable glimpse into Arezzo’s rich heritage.
