Our First Archidado, by Erik and Triffany
Tiffany and I bought our home in Cortona last year, but didn’t make the transition to living here until this year.
We learned of the historical reenactment of the Archidado and searched for how we might be able to participate and represent our district, Peccioverardi.
The Archidado dates back to 1325 and contains a number of events beginning in the 2nd week of May and ending in mid June with a wedding reenactment and crossbow competition (joust).
Each of the five districts of Cortona participate and have medieval outfits that represent the nobility and people of high standing. There are two parades through the streets and both terminate in either Piazza della Repubblica or Signorelli.
The first parade actually stops in the first piazza, but ends at the Chiesa Santa Margherita at the top of the city, just below the fortessa (fortress) where there is a church service and the donation of the candles representing each of the districts.
The entire event, over multiple days, meeting people from the district, dressing in fantastic clothing and representing our district was truly special and we are both very appreciative of being able to participate and being accepted into our district and the community of Cortona.
