The Italian Fiscal Code Number - Codice Fiscale

The fiscal code number (Codice Fiscale) is a unique taxpayer code that identifies all individuals, given to Italians at birth, in their dealings with the Italian authorities and is a mandatory requirements for a whole series of activities.

All foreigners have to apply to the Italian Tax Agency (Agenzie delle Entrate).

When is a Codice Fiscale needed?

It is required for many and various things, the most important and essential are:

- Open a bank account

- Purchase, sell and renting properties

- Access to the Italian healthcare system

- Sign utility contracts

- Purchase a motor vehicle

- Enter into HP/Finance Leasing contracts

- File tax returns, pay tax and get refunds

How to get a code

Make an appointment to your local tax office to request a code, making sure you take your identification copies of necessary documentation.
