Italian Elective residency permit
What to do after your elective residency visa has been granted to live in Italy…..
Once you have your visa granted, there are still steps needed to take place in Italy to obtain your permanent residency permit.
Need to apply for your permit within 8 days of arriving in Italy.
Go to the post office to collect ‘kit’ for residency application. The document is about 8 pages long in Italian!
Make an appointment with a ‘patronato’, a government funded organisation that provides free assistance with bureaucratic tasks. For example, CGIL in Camucia
Once forms have been completed, along with photocopies of your passport and ERV, a ‘Marco di bollo’ tax stamp for €16 (obtained from a newsagents tabaccheria) plus proof of address in Italy, health insurance policy and financial documents showing that you have the means to support yourself without working (threshold is at least €31,000)
Take all documents to the post office where you will be charged €30 to send off the application plus a fee of €40 for a one year permit and another €30.46 for an electronic ‘permesso di soggiorno’ card. The post office will give you a small receipt proving that you have applied DON’T LOSE THIS RECEIPT - it is your evidence of your temporary right to stay in Italy until your application has been processed and your residency issued.
The post office will then give you an appointment time and date for the next step, which is visiting the ‘questura’ police headquarters.
At the questura you will be called to the counter and fingerprints will be taken. They will ask you for 4 passport sized photos and your original passport and any other relevant documents sent in your proposal.
You will get a reference code to be able to check the status of your application online using the Polizia di Stato’s online portal.
Once your application is ready, a green tick on the portal, you will need to return to the questura to collect your permesso di soggiorno elettronico - it should be within 60 days of your appointment
As an ERV holder, you will need to renew your residency within one year and you should apply for renewal 60 days prior to expiry date. It sounds daunting but after 5 years of permanent residency in Italy, you can then apply for a permanent residency permit
