Fortress in Lucignano

FAI day trips

Again this year, the FAI (Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano) has organised it’s spring days with which villas and places, that are usually closed to the public, are open and can be viewed.

This year, we went to Lucignano, to visit the cloisters of the San Francisco church which have recently been restored and with the visit we also learnt more of the history attached to the church, religion, education and of the sewing school, where it’s products can still be viewed.

We also visited the fortress

which was last utilised in the war between Siena and Florence, which started in the 500’s and where you can appreciate fantastic views of the wonderful Val di Chiana (Arezzo, Castiglion Fiorentino, Cortona…and just out of view is the Lake Trasimeno).

Open to the public were also the castle of Montegualandro, located near Cortona along the historic border between the Papal State and the Grand Duke of Tuscany, located in Puntabella, Tuoro sul Trasimeno. This fortress dominates Lake Trasimeno and has done for over 900 years and is in an area that was inhabited by the Etruscan.

They have plans to also visit Il Palazzone, the San Michele Hotel and Palazzo Ferretti.
