Borgo di Vagli is BEAUTIFUL.

It was built in the 14th century as a guard tower to protect the impressive Pierle Castle (10th century) from marauders entering the Niccone valley from the hills behind Cortona. After the Middle Ages, the guard tower had no further military function. Its battlements were cropped and the stones were used to create a small homestead for a farmer and his family, who worked his entire life for the local landowner. During the next three to four hundred years, more farmers and their families, attracted by the rich surrounding farmland and woodland, set up homes around the old guard tower. This tradition continued, almost unchanged, until the end of World War II.
 
After WW II, families began to move out of the Borgo, migrating towards the new towns where post-war jobs, offering greater opportunity than farming, were easily found and where life was considerably more comfortable! By the late ‘80s Vaglie was completely abandoned.

It remained abandoned until the late nineties when the architect Fulvio di Rosa was first introduced to the property. He immediately saw the potential of restoring these crofter’s cottages to an exceptionally high standard and offering fractional ownership to an international clientele who would appreciate its authenticity, charm and location.

The rest of Vagli’s story is a “recent” one: the restoration works started in 2000 and were completed in 2005. Owners from all over the world regularly return to their “home in Tuscany” and experience the undiluted pleasure, together with their friends and families, of being a part of something traditionally Tuscan.

All 21 houses in the hamlet were fully restored in order to keep the spirit of the medieval hamlet alive. A large pool has been built within the grounds and there is a very good Trattoria with outdoor seating which has wonderful views overlooking the Val di Pierle.

Borgo Vagli is situated just 4 kms from the small town of Mercatale di Cortona which has all basics – banks, a pharmacy, supermarkets etc…. – and 20 minutes from the town of Cortona itself which is a hive of activity from the spring through to the fall with ongoing cultural, musical and visual art events, not to mention its now famous penchant for combining fine wines with fine dining.

Borgo Di Vagli is uniquely located in the hills of Cortona and hence close to many of the must-see towns of Tuscany such as Montepulciano, Siena, Pienza, Arezzo, Firenze, etc… It is also well situated to visit Umbria’s most famous towns such as Perugia, Todi, Spoleto, Assisi … which are all within a radius of 50 to 90 minutes. 

Nearest airports are Perugia 50 mins, Florence 1hr 30mins, Rome 2hrs 30 mins. Main line train stations Rome-Florence-Milan are at a distance of 20 mins.
 
Annual maintenance fees – for a 1/10th fractional ownership of a two bedroom property in the Borgo and which includes all utilities (electricity, gas, internet, regular and extraordinary maintenance of the houses and garden) - is approx. E.3.300 p/a inclusive of IVA (VAT). This does not include a (mandatory) clean at the end of one’s stay which costs in the region of E.30.
